How to improve football recruiting at SMU...

With signing day less than a week away, SMU is wrapping up their 2008 recruiting class. To this point, SMU has pulled in a weak class according to the recruiting site www.rivals.com. Now obviously June Jones, SMU's hew head football coach, was not given enough time to put together a nationally solid recruiting class. So the jury is still out on Jones' ability to recruit at SMU, but I am sick of the trend. Rivals rates their recruits on a one to five star scale with one being the lowest and five being the bet. Over the last couple of years, SMU signed a lot of two star recruits with enough three star recruits to count on one hand.

So far this year, SMU has signed only two star recruits. Who knows? Maybe Jones sees "four or five star" potential in these players, but regardless we need to change our ways. Here are some ideas for Jones and his new staff: Focus on recruiting in Texas, but take advantage of recruiting knowledge in Hawaii and the West Coast areas. In Texas, focus on football dominant schools to try and create pipelines to SMU. Schools like Southlake Carroll, Denton Ryan, High land Park, Katy, Lake Travis, etc. For Jones' first couple of years bringing in two or three transfer athletes of JUCO players could help us become more competitive right away. SMU also needs to focus on talented football players around the nation who fit the "SMU profile" may also help us improve our recruiting problem. Improving our recruiting would have a direct impact on our success as a football program. SMU has a lot to sell, I hope June Jones and his staff take advantage of what the school has to offer. Looking forward to seeing what SMU's 2008 recruiting class looks like on signing day. GO PONIES!
