Last night I watched the movie "Blood Diamond" with a few of my fraternity brothers and it got me thinking...Why aren't there more movies out there like "Blood Diamond" that serve a purpose? "Blood Diamond" is a great movie that centers around one of our world's problems, conflict diamonds. At the end of the movie, there are a few slides that come up telling the people to ask for conflict-free diamonds when they are purchasing anything with a diamond in it. The movie defined what life is really like over there in Africa, and after watching it you can see that there are problems. One of the slides that came up before the credits stated that there are still 200,000 children soldiers in Africa. Many of them, if not all of them, are involved in the African diamond problem.
I just think that more movies like "Blood Diamond", that clearly demonstrate a weakness in our world, or a situation that we need to improve is important. I definitely agree that we need a little humor in our lives, and comedies are a great source of that. How awesome would it be if 75% of the movies that we watched daily served a worldly purpose? Or taught us something that we didn't know before viewing the movie. In a perfect world, I think it is important that the people of the world are always learning. Creating opportunities to learn through movies is a great approach to teaching the people of the world what areas need improvement. I don't know too many people who don't like to sit down every once in a while and just spend two hours watching a great movie. Imagine if every time someone did this, they learned about a way they can improve society...
